Objective

One of the fundamental elements of an altimetric satellite calibration and validation (CAL/VAL) site is knowledge about the local geoid, as well as the possibility of taking  measurements vertical to the satellite track using lightweight, robust and accurate equipment during measurement surveys (GNSS buoy). In the framework of the FOAM project (CNES request), developing "fixed" GNSS buoys and accurate tide gauges as well as a GNSS carpet for mapping the marine geoid is planned. One of the study zones is in the Kerguelen islands around the historic tide gauge there and passes of satellites Jason-2&3, Sentinel-3A and SARAL/AltiKa.

The related project is FOAM (From Ocean to inland waters Altimetry Monitoring).
