본 연구는 고등학생 독자 250명을 대상으로 설문 조사를 실시하여 웹툰, 웹소설 읽기 실태와 인식에 대해 분석한 결과이다. 연구에 참여한 고등학생 독자 중 87.2%의 학생이 웹툰을 읽은 경험이 ‘있다’라고 응답했다. 특히 간헐적 독자와 비독자 집단의 웹툰 읽기 빈도가 습관적 독자 집단보다 유의하게 높은 결과가 나타났다. 이에 반해 웹소설 읽기 경험이 ‘없다’라고 응답한 학생은 67.6%로 드러났다. 웹툰과 웹소설의 읽기 경험 여부와 빈도, 지속성에 차이가 있는 이유를 장르적 특징, 주요 독자층의 차이, 사회적 인식 등의 요인을 통해 검토하였다. 고등학생 독자가 웹툰, 웹소설을 읽는 이유와 선정 기준, 선호 장르에 대해 알아보고, 이들이 읽은 후에 하는 활동을 ‘이해-공감-소통-창작’의 스펙트럼으로 살펴보았다. 고등학생 독자들에게 웹툰은 ‘재미’로, 웹소설은 ‘독서 경험’으로 인식하는 경향이 두드러졌다. 특히 웹소설은 읽기 능력 향상에 ‘도움이 된다’라고 인식하는 비율이 높았다. 본 연구를 통해 고등학생 독자의 웹툰, 웹소설 읽기 실태와 인식을 살펴본 것은 디지털 매체 환경에서 청소년 독자의 독서 활동 행위에 대한 이해를 제고할 수 있다는 측면에서 의미가 있다.

This study analyzes the reality and perception of reading webtoons and web novels by conducting a survey on 250 high school readers. Among the participants of the study, 87.2% of the students answered that they had read webtoons. The frequency of reading webtoons in the intermittent reader and non-reader groups was significantly higher than in the habitual reader group. 67.6% of students answered that they had no experience in reading web novels. The reasons for the differences in reading experience, frequency, and continuity of webtoons and web novels were reviewed through factors such as genre characteristics, differences in major readership, and social perception. We looked into the reasons, selection criteria, and preferred genres of high school readers for reading webtoons and web novels, and looked at their activities after reading them in the spectrum of ‘understanding-empathy-communication-creation’. High school readers tended to perceive webtoons as ‘fun’ and web novels as ‘reading experiences’. The percentage that perceived web novels as ‘helpful’ for improving reading ability was high. This study is meaningful as it can enhance the understanding of adolescent readers' reading activities in a digital media environment.
