Abstract:
This data set includes measurements from moored instruments, collected at the southern Weddell Sea continental slope, in the period between 16 February 2010 and 14 February 2011. The data set was collected as a part of the International Polar Year project entitled “Bipolar Atlantic Thermohaline Circulation (BIAC)”, under the working theme “Downslope processes, pathways, cascading and mixing”. The objective was to study the dynamics and mixing of the dense overflow plume on the continental slope of the Weddell Sea northwest of the Filchner Depression. Moored observations from the previous year, but further to the east, can be found in Fer (2016, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.869799). The mooring positions in 2010-2011 were targeted to capture the variability associated with the Filchner overflow plume, on the upper continental slope.The final deployed positions are in the overflow region, however, were altered because of unfavorable ice conditions.
The data set includes time series of ocean temperature, salinity and currents on the continental slope of the southeastern Weddell Sea at approximately 1400 m and 1850 m isobaths near 74°S; 36°W. (A third mooring unfortunately could not be recovered in 2011, nor in the following years, because of sea ice conditions.) The measurements delivered with this data set are not gridded, and are submitted at the sampled time resolution. Time series are quality controlled, and suspect data are removed, but not interpolated. Episodic mooring knock-down events occured, but the mooring dynamics is not modelled. Instrument depths are estimated from available pressure sensors and the mooring element lengths. The mooring drawings and a detailed description can be found in the report (Fer, 2017), together with the time series plots. The temperature measurements were made by accurate temperature sensors on Sea-Bird Electronics instruments (SBE39 and SBE37), as well as by the temperature sensors on current meters and current profilers. When a SBE instrument is located nearby (within 5 m) the current meter, the temperature sensor from the current meter is excluded, because the precision and accuray of the SBE T-sensors are better. Current measurements were made by Anderaa current meters (RCM7/8, Seaguard RCM) and acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs, RD-Instruments 75/300 kHz Workhorse). Instrumentation details can be found in the report. The sampling rate was 5 min for the SBE instruments, 1 hour for the RCM 7/8 and 20 min for the Seaguard RCM, RDI 300 kHz and RDI 75 kHz.
