Effect of exercise on emotional and cognitive functions in offspring with maternal post-traumatic stress disorder.
ABSTRACT
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder triggered by life-threatening events causing intense fear. Its characteristic symptoms are re-experiencing phenomena, avoidance of stimuli, emotional numbing, and increased arousal. Many studies have suggested the possibility that exercise has a protective effect on neuropsychiatric diseases, and improves cognitive function. In order to induce predator stress on pregnant rats, the pregnant rats were exposed to the hunting dog in an enclosed room. Exposure time was 10 minutes, 3 times with one hour interval in a day, at gestation day 7, 9, 11, and 13. The pregnant rats in the exercise group were forced to run on a treadmill for 30 min once a day, starting one week after pregnancy until delivery. The rat pups born from the PTSD exposed maternal rats showed anxiety-related behaviors and short-term memory impairment. The rat pups born from the maternal rats performing treadmill exercise during pregnancy ameliorated PTSD-induced anxiety-related behaviors and short-term memory disturbance. The present results suggest that maternal treadmill exercise during exposure to PTSD has ameliorative effects on stress-associated symptoms of offspring.
