초록

For a long time the Korean society has emphasized its identity as a single ethnic culture. However, the society has been rapidly transforming into that of a multicultural one as the open-economy policy, internalization, and globalization advances. A new multicultural Christian religious educational perspective that questions how the Korean Church should respond to such change in social phenomena is needed. In the Korean Academia, the term, multicultural education, first appeared after the 2000’s and some serious researches were published starting from 2007. In spite of such efforts,most multicutlural education programs and materials of the Korean government have been focusing on the adaption of the foreign/minority immigrant in the Korean context, such as learning both the Korean language and traditional cultures. Further compared to these general research trends, researches on multicultural religious education in the korean context are far too scarce. Considering this reality, the author briefly introduces the historical backgrounds and core philosophies of multicultural education in the Unites States of America. Further, through analyzing the definitions and theories of multicultural education and diagnosing the problems of the Korean context, some insights for preparing the theories and practices of multicultural Christian religious education for the future of the Korean Presbyterian Church are suggested.
