Lee, Jae-Young. 2015. Phonological Non-uniformity in English. Korean Journal of English Language and Linguistics 15-2, 129-147. This paper demonstrates that a lot of English data lead to a claim that English has a variety of phonological non-uniformity. The term phonological non-uniformity means here that competing generalizations are simultaneously made for phonologically identical or similar structures. When we are faced with phonological structures, we are tempted to deal with them by falling back on the dichotomous concept of regularity. The term regularity implies that a specific pattern is normal and preferred while the other one is abnormal and dispreferred. On the other hand, the concept of non-uniformity is value-neutral to normality and preference. Based on a lot of English phonological data, this paper justifies the existence of phonological non-uniformity in English phonology. The phonological data discussed here include morphophonemic alternations, metrical footing, prosodic word structures and resyllabification.
