A sequence of an alveolar stop and an alveolar nasal in American English is subject to various phonological variations such as flapping, nasal plosion and glottaling. Based on the Buckeye Corpus of Conversational Speech, this paper examined how such a sequence was realized depending on morphological, phonetic, phonological and sociolinguistic factors. Results indicate that voiceless alveolar stops before alveolar nasals frequently underwent glottaling while voiced counterparts tended to participate in nasal plosion, which shows that [voice] is a significant factor. Such a result lies in the tendency to respect faithfulness to the voice feature. The result also shows that glottaling of a voiceless alveolar stop is an active phonological rule that applies wherever it meets the environment. In terms of morphology, nasal plosion was prevalent within a root while glottaling was very common over an affix boundary, which means that consonantal weakening such as glottaling applies more to a weak morphological unit. Gender and Age, however, were not main factors in those variations.
