초록

Evolution is a core theory which can explain the diversity of living organisms. The purpose of this study was to determine implications on the evolution education by comparing and analyzing various subjects and content elements presented in the chapter which deals with evolution in middle school science textbooks of Korea and the US. The analysis framework consisting of a total of 8main themes and 32 sub-themes was used for the content classification of evolution. The contents consist of the evidences for evolution and the evolution process in common, but the textbook in the US also includes themes such as geological time, speciation, coevolution, origin of life and evolution of human being. The textbook in Korea includes some scientific errors such as Lamarckism, the developmental similarity in the embryo of vertebrate that need to be improved. And it is necessary to emphasize the importance of heritable variation in the theory of natural selection. Meanwhile, the textbook in the US gives major coverage to the subject of natural selection and presents various specific examples of natural selection. Efforts for developing various inquiry activities in evolution need to be improved in both textbooks. It is necessary to place emphasis on collection and retention of reliable evidences for evolution. And it is also essential to extend the contents including the origin of human being and geological time gradually when establishing the educational direction of evolution in Korea. The measures for raising the teacher's belief through the improvement of awareness regarding the mechanism and roles of evolution are also required.
