시인이기에 앞서 건축학도이자 건축기술자였던 이상에게 건축적인 사유와상상력은 단지 은유적인 관념으로서가 아니라 세속적인 삶 속에서 작동하는것이었다. 이상의 비평적 지지자를 자처했던 당대의 문우 김기림은 20세기적인 시적 모더니티를 ‘언어의 건축물’을 제작하는 과학적인 시학에서 찾은 바있다. 1930년대 모더니즘 시의 두 가지 지향을 대변한다고도 할 수 있는 기림과 이상은 두 사람 모두 ‘건축’을 키워드로 하고 있었으나, 그 건축적 상상력이 작용하는 방식과 효과는 대조적인 양상을 보인다. 이상이 한국문학사에선보인 낯설고 기이한 건축적 공간은 김기림이 구상한 건축적 모더니티의 지붕 아래에서는 불가능한 공간이었다.
문학 제도 바깥의 기호 공간이었던 『조선과 건축』은 이상으로 하여금 문학적인 기대지평의 압박 없이 자유롭게 자신의 문학적 실험을 하기에 용이한지면을 제공했다. 이상은 시, 소설, 에세이 사이의 장르론적 경계가 애매한글쓰기를 통해 한국문학사가 그간 구축해온 장르론적 건축성을 흔들었으며,숫자와 수학기호 그리고 과학적인 상상력과 산물에서 촉발되는 과학어(科學語)를 시적으로 응용하고 활용하여 한국시의 어휘(vocabulary)에 이질성을 추가하였다. 이상 시에 나타나는 건축물들은 유한한 결정체로 완결되어 있는자율적인 구조물이 아니라 주체가 공간을 살아가는 방식에 의해 잠식되고 변형되는 불확정적이고 생성적이며 기형적인 양상을 띠는데, 이는 구조주의적인 ‘건축의 불가능성’을 환기하는 것이었다. 또한 이 ‘건축의 불가능성’은 어떠한 잉여도 남기지 않는 ‘구성적인 주체’가 불가능한 기획임을 노출하는 시적 방식이기도 했다. ‘인체와 건축의 상호교환성’이 두드러지는 이상의 시에서 무대화되는 몸은 유동적으로 변형되는 기이한 건축물처럼 보인다. 이 몸은 몸의 건축성을 해체하는 몸이었다고 할 수 있다. 이상 시에서 모더니티의출구를 찾는다면, 그것은 건축의 불가능성으로 작동하는 생성적인 건축과 그불가능성을 고통스럽게 체현하는 몸의 생채기에서 어렵게 더듬어질 것이다.

Joseon and Architecture in which Yi Sang published his poems for thefirst time was a space of sign outside the system of literature. In themagazine, he tried to build his poems which shook the genre architecture inKorean literary history, without a request or an intervention by the literarysystem. He developed numbers, mathematical characters, and variousscientific terms, applied them to a poetic diction, and added heterogeneity tovocabulary of Korean poetry. Yi Sang’s architecture is not autonomous structures with solid durabilityand fixation but indeterminate shapes which interact with inhabitants’ waysof using space, transform and move continuously. The point evokes thestructuralist ‘impossibility of architecture’. And it is exposed that thisimpossibility is a project which does not leave any surplus and make‘constructional subject’. Yi Sang’s poems clearly bring out ‘interconversion between the humanbody and architecture’. The human body looks like an unique structurewhich transforms fluidly. His poetic body is equal to the body whichdeconstructs the architecture of body.
