Abstract
The dependence of the Mg–Al-spinel structure upon the thermal history has been established by means of neutron-diffraction investigations of synthetic and natural polycrystalline MgAl2O4 and ZnAl2O4 samples. In comparison to a usual spinel cation distribution structures with considerable amounts of long-range ordered interstitial cations are shown to be improbable within space group Fd3m.
