内容記述 | This paper is the first in a series of studies that will undertake a theoretical examination of narratology as a method for narrative analysis. The aim of this project is twofold. First, we seek to resolve the discrepancies between concepts employed in the methodologies of Russian Formalism and narratology. Second, we will construct a system-based model for narrative analysis under a structuralist methodology. This paper reexamines the concepts of story (fabula) and plot (syuzet)—two core concepts of Russian Formalist theory that were later incorporated into narratology—from the perspective of structuralist methodology. Russian Formalism, a Russian literary movement that occurred around 1920, and narratology, first championed by Todorov in the 1960s, are in the same family within literary studies: they both belong to the discipline of poetics, which explores the internal mechanisms of literary works without reference to the author's psychological or social background. However, Russian Formalism advocated a “science of literature” by focusing only on the physiological effects of “defamiliarization” and “form” during readers’ experiences of individual works and excluding theoretical considerations of methodology. Narratology, on the other hand, argues that the consistent employment of a single methodology is precisely what defines literary studies as a science, and thus it seeks one universal method applicable to every narrative. The present study reveals that references to story and plot by formalists such as V. Shklovsky and B. Tomashevsky are not consistent. Further, we attempt to reconceptualize the story/plot diagram from a binary opposition into a two-tier model following the theoretical models developed by Gérard Genette and Wolf Schmidt. This model will provide us a foundation to perform narrative analysis of individual works in subsequent studies. |
