  • Mechanical and Antibacterial Activity of Biodegradable Na-CMC: PVA Reinforced with Al2O3 Nanoparticles   Order a copy of this article

    Abstract: Sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose /Polyvinyl alcohol composite (Na-CMC/PVA) reinforced with Al2O3 NPs was prepared by solution casting. The FTIR spectroscopy illustrates the characteristic bands for both Na-CMC and PVA. Some bands disappeared in the composite sample due to interaction between the blended polymers. Additional bands appeared in the reinforced samples attributed to the characteristic of metal-oxide vibrations indicated on reinforcement of polymer chains. The FE-SEM shows that the Na-CMC: PVA composite looked rubber-like, while the nanocomposite samples appeared more restricted by the Al2O3 nanoparticles, which restrict the sample elasticity, increases in stress yield and Young's modulus. The reinforced copolymer showed good, effective antibacterial against pathogenic bacteria. The antibacterial activity of E. coli, is more significant than Staph. aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria, and enhanced with increasing the nanoparticles ratio. The results indicated that Na-CMC/PVA- Al2O3 NPS could be applied as an antibacterial agent.
