International Journal of Human Resources Development and Management (IJHRDM), Vol. 23, No. 3, 2023

Abstract: Leaders should encourage employees in the right direction to achieve the company's strategic goals. This study focuses on transformational leaders who can motivate their subordinates and help them reach their highest capabilities by focusing on optimism and the influence on performance levels. Factors such as job burnout could hinder employees' performance, influenced by company culture and performance appraisal. Combining a comprehensive model and innovative methodology, this paper offers a new perspective on the impact of managers' leadership. The paper uses factor analysis and HLM to analyse the multilevel regression between employees' job performance, job burnout, and their managers' leadership styles. Using data from 381 questionnaires distributed in 2022 in the retail drugstore industry in Taiwan, the results show that while burnout is detrimental to employees' performance, a transformational leader acts as a motivator and influencer which leads to better achievement.
