Abstract Owing to the scarcity of fossils of definite ages, remarkable change in facies, complicated geologic structure, etc., our knowledge of the Sambosan belt, the southernmost belt of the Chichibu Terrain ...of the Outer Zone, Southwest Japan, has been very incomplete despite its significant situation in geotectonic history of the latest Paleozoic to the early Mesozoic. In Kyushu this belt crosses the middle course of the Kuma river in the Kuma massif, where excellent exposures of the Konose Group, a typical representative of the rocks of the belt, are seen. The Konose Group is a thick conformable series (about 1300 m) ranging in age from the upper part of the Permian (containing Yabeina columbiana) to the Upper Triassic. It is a group of rocks of eugeosynclinal lithologic assemblage accumulated within and along a submarine volcanic belt in _those ages, being characterized by a large quantity of tuff, tuff-breccia and and volcanic breccia, with some lava flows, of basaltic composition, numerous lenticular bodies of limestone of various dimensions, bedded to nodular and ribbon-shaped chert, and occasionally intercalated mudstone with subordinate lenticules of sandstone and a few thin bands of chert-conglomerate. This paper deals with detailed descriptions of stratigraphy and lithology of the Konose Group, and correlation and facies relationships of it to the coeval formations in other areas. Remarks are also given on the sedimentary environment and geotectonic significance of the group. This is a companion paper with "T rrii assic coral faunas fro切 theKonose Group in Kyushu."show more
