Considerations when Using Informal Education Centers to Promote Learning

Abstract

Recommendations are provided regarding why informal education programming should be included in our schools.  Eight recommendations are provided to help informal educators connect to individuals and organized groups.

James E Hollenbeck, Indiana University Southeast

Dr. James Hollenbeck, Professor of Science Education at Indiana University Southeast, is the Coordinator of the Science Education Program, teaches “Science, Technology and Society for a Changing World”,” Environmental Sustainability”, “Secondary Science Teaching Methods” and “Elementary Science Teaching Methods”. Dr. Hollenbeck earned his Ph. D at the University of Iowa. Before joining Higher Education, Dr. Hollenbeck taught secondary science education in Iowa and Nebraska for 13 years. 

            Dr. Hollenbeck is a past Fulbright Fellow Lecturer/Research at the Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski. There he taught “Environmental Science” at City University-Bulgaria,” and “Science, Technology and Society” at Sofia.  Dr. Hollenbeck is an author of numerous publications. In 2009, Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” recognized of his work in science education and research in Bulgaria and awarded him the 120 Anniversary Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” Medal of Merit, Recognition in Outstanding Achievement in Research in Science Education. Hollenbeck received a second Fulbright to Canada as a Research Chair in 2015.
