Abstract:
Presents the results of nonlinear seismic analysis of six eight-story reinforced concrete frames with the selected parameters of natural period of vibration and base shear strength. The structures were subjected to five different ground motion components. Results indicated that the period of the structure tends to increase during the earthquake, the increase being greater for the weaker structures. For the cases studied, strength was relevant to drift response depending on the ratio of the effective period of the structure to the dominant period of base motion. For practical purposes, a linear elastic response spectrum (in terms of an effective period of vibration) was found to be a valuable tool to estimate drift response.
