Abstract:
These recommendations are for proportioning and detailing beam-column joints in monolithic reinforced concrete structures where the column width is equal to or greater than the beam width. The specific design recommendations are presented in form and language similar to that of ACI 3 18-71, set off in italic type at the beginning of each section. The explanatory commentary material follows in standard type. It is intended to identify for the structural engineer problems which should be considered in design and to provide guidance toward the solution of those problems. The recommendations are based on laboratory as well as field experience and provide a state-of-the-art summary of current information. Areas for needed research are identified. Design examples are presented to illustrate the use of the design recommendations.
