Abstract:
Joint studies between the National Research Council of Canada and the Portland Cement Association on reinforced concrete columns were started several years ago for the purpose of updating the information on fire resistance ratings for these columns in North American building codes. The studies include the development of mathematical models for the calculation of the fire resistance of columns of various sizes and shapes, as well as experimental studies. Among the columns examined were columns with rectangular cross section. In this paper, a method is described for the calculation of the fire resistance of reinforced concrete columns with such cross sections.
