Personal Attributes: Influences on Clothing Disposal Reasons and Frequency

Clothing disposal practices that contribute to increased textile waste is a growing environmental concern. In addition to industry and retail initiatives, consumers' personal factors also drive disposal practices. Little research has been done to explore the proposition that individuals with varying personal attributes and demographics may dispose of clothing for different reasons. An online survey was conducted with 555 participants from the United States. The reasons given for clothing disposal are related to personal attributes and demographics. Identifying the influences of those factors will provide a foundation for the development of strategies that contribute to the discouragement of premature clothing disposal.
