The development of various impression materials, and the use of the various techniques associated with them, are chronologically reviewed.

The history of complete denture impression procedures has been influenced largely by the development of impression materials from which new ideas and techniques arose. Apparently, some procedures have been devised solely for the promotion of certain impression materials. For the most part, however, impression materials have been developed to accomplish specific goals and, at the time at least, were considered desirable for the purpose.

The development of high-speed handpieces in the 1950s reduced by 30% the time needed for tooth preparation, increasing productivity.23 In 1925, agar was used for the first time to make dental impressions.24 The war with Japan reduced supplies of agar-agar, stimulating the development of irreversible hydrocolloids, which allowed dentists to do more complex restorations.
