Abstract
Vitamin E is comprised of two homologous series of tocochromanols, termed “tocopherols” and “tocotrienols.” They are structurally related, having a common chromanol ring, but distinguished by their side chains. Tocopherols have a saturated phytyl tail, whereas the tocotrienols possess an unsaturated isoprenoid side chain. Four homologs of each type, characterized by their Greek prefixes (α, β, γ, δ), are known to exist in nature (1).
