(A,B) Production of PSMα3 and δ-toxin in culture filtrates of a CC30 strain collection (see Fig. 1C). PSMs were measured by HPLC/MS. (C) Production of α-toxin, which was measured by Western blots and densitometry of α-toxin bands in the same culture filtrates. N.S., not significant. For the comparison of α-toxin production, no significance could be computed, as all contemporary strains with hla mutations completely lacked α-toxin production. One strain in the collection contains only the agrC, but not the hla mutation, and was grouped according to presence/absence of those mutations.
