Simulations for the discrete model with and without sloughing.

Figures 4A and 4C illustrate instances with sloughing and 4B and 4D without sloughing. In this example intially N = 1000 with the number of individuals migrating into the water packet at a single sloughing event equal to 1000. We see an increase in the carrying capacity of the water introduced by the increased biomass and an increase in the number and proportion of biofilm introduced individuals. Sloughing events are characterised by larger jumps in both the relative abundance and the absolute numbers.
