Serum after Autologous Transplantation Stimulates Proliferation and Expansion of Human Hematopoietic Progenitor Cells

Serum after HSCT stimulates proliferation of CD34+ cells.

Serum samples were taken before chemotherapy and eight days after autologous HSCT, when leukocyte counts are at a minimum. Serum was subsequently supplemented for in vitro expansion of CD34+ cells for 1 week either without stromal support or with co-culture of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC). Analysis was either performed with the MTT-assay (A) or using a cell counter to determine fold-expansion rates (B). Serum from neutropenic patients significantly increased proliferation of HPC (* p<0.05; ** p<0.01; error bars represent SD).
