Abstract
Textile processes are resource intensive and there is a lack of transparency in quantifying the environmental impact of processes. Business process modeling using standardized notations enables visualization and analysis of processes, but less is known about its application in the textile industry. Using a case study of a Berlin-based retailer of sustainable textiles, this study explores the potential of business process modeling for a sustainability assessment of textiles, contributing to the existing body of knowledge. Using the life cycle assessment method, four types of textile finishing processes were modeled and their sustainability rating was calculated based on eight indicators identified in the literature. The results show that business process modeling combined with the life cycle assessment method offers potential value for investigating and identifying critical tasks, activities, and elements related to environmental impacts. We argue that the application of business process modeling approaches can support green IT initiatives. However, the discussion on sustainability initiatives through Green BPM is still at an early stage. Therefore, the contribution of this research paper, which uses business process modeling together with Green BPM, is essential for both research and practice in the field of “sustainability and information technology”.
