Abstract

Ultrafast modelocked pulse generation in the near infrared wavelength region is of interest in spectroscopy, optical communications, and nonlinear wavelength conversion techniques. In the 2 μm wavelength region, modelocked operation of a flashpumped Ho:YAG laser generated pulses of 570 psec duration.[1] In this paper, we investigate the performance of an actively modelocked continuous-wave (cw) 2 μm Tm:YAG laser. Stable, transform- limited pulses of 35 psec duration have been obtained at a repetition rate of 300 MHz, with an average output power of 70 mW.
