Abstract
The photoelectric effect on Ni, Pt, and W has been used in the design of windowless phototubes for the direct detection of radiation in the vacuum ultraviolet, especially of wavelengths below the transmission limit of LiF. Yields were found to be as high as 10 photoelectrons per 100 incident quanta for the wavelength region below 1000A. Good preliminary results were obtained with these tubes: extremely high quantum yields, reproducibility after exposure to air, and adjustability of the spectral response by the external circuit.
