Abstract: This paper intends to make a theoretical foundation of the application of the ecological floating bed method through retrospect of the latest research advances in this field in the world. As is known, with the development of industry and agriculture in China, water environment has been seriously damaged, particularly, serious pollution caused by the eutrophication to the water quality of lakes and reservoirs. The ever increasing water pollution of water environment have brought about great harm and threat even to human health and the normal economic development of China. In hoping to find better solutions to this problem and improve the water quality by more effective control of the eutrophic water bodies,we would like to propose the following practical measures, with the ecological floating bed,in particular. The so-called ecological floating bed can be said to be a feasible biological treatment technology to treat the problem of eutrophic water bodies. As an effective measure, the technology is simple in use, economic in space demand, and strong in purification effect. As long as it is possible to cut off the plants from the water bodies, the pollutants of the plants tend to be removed. It can not only purify the water body and protect the aquatic environment, but can bring some economic benefits to the water environment users as well. To be exact, the ecological floating bed consists of four steps: the framework, which is used to sustain the whole floating bed; which itself can provide the overall floatage; the substrate is the basic elements to provide nutrients for the plants to grow; plants, the main part of the floating bed,are potential to provide the largest efficacy to purify the sewage. In addition, the article also describes the main approaches to water purification by ecological floating bed in detail. First of all,we have explored the physical effects and the chemical precipitation. Secondly, the absorbability of the plants has been studied. Thirdly, some research has been done on the transmission of oxygen. Fourthly, measures have been taken to inhibit the effects caused by algae. The fifth is degradation of the microorganism; The sixth is the exploration of the synergetic function of plants and microorganism. Furthermore,we have also made a brief introduction to the external factors of affecting the removal efficiency, such as the temperature and pH and the method of economic benefit analysis. In spite of the great advantages, the method has also had its shortages, such as the limited removal efficiency in the deep water and lack of enough carbon source for the denitrifying bacteria and so on. Besides,we have also come up with some hot research topics in the following programs to strengthen the overall research for its wider application.
