Abstract:

Recent animated fairy tales by Michel Ocelot offer advantages over classic tales by Charles Perrault for building literacy skills in intermediate-level French courses. Contemporary language, as well as themes relevant to current discussions of intercultural competence, make Ocelot’s videos important pedagogical tools. Interpretation of these stories focuses on crosscultural comprehension and leads to the development of multi-modal skills (interpretive, interpersonal, presentational) through individual and collaborative creative activities. In the tradition of the Surrealists’ Cadavre exquis, students create texts then peer-edit to refine those texts.
