South African Dance Journal is a peer-reviewed journal that examines "dance academic voices in South Africa, Africa, and the international community." The launch of the journal deliberately coincided with the international dance conference CONFLUENCES that is hosted by the University of Cape Town. Although the editorial board states that each issue will have no more than six articles, the debut issue features eight articles plus two editorials. The journal may not hold immediate appeal for non-dance scholars; however, many articles include some research related to music. Although most of the advisory board is based in South Africa, three members are affiliated with American universities.

The articles range from masculinity in western (South African) dance, improvisation instruction at the University of Stellenbosch (South Africa), and dance as obesity prevention.

Authors are instructed to submit articles in English or indigenous South African languages of up to 5,000 words including up to five black and white illustrations.

Unfortunately, no biographical or institutional information is provided for any of the contributors and as the journal is so new and clearly a grassroots effort, it is neither indexed nor abstracted in any databases. As of March, 2012, it was not included in Ulrich's. This journal has the potential to complement existing performing arts research and call attention to South Africa's burgeoning dance scene.

Act: Zeitschrift für Musik und Performance (http://www.act.uni-bayreuth.de/de/index.html)

Open-access, peer-reviewed journal, in German, English, French and Italian, covering all aspects of music, theatre, film, and performing arts. The semi-annual journal, debuted in September 2010, is published by the Universität Bayreuth, and is currently not indexed in databases. Full articles are available in both HTML and PDF formats. Author guidelines are available on the website, but as of March, 2012, the editors were not seeking new articles.

Journal of Sonic Studies ( JSS) (http://sonicstudies.org; ISSN 2212-6252), is a semi-annual, open-access, peer-reviewed, English-language journal published by Leiden University Press and is indexed in the Directory of Open Access Journals. According to the editors, the journal "studies the dynamic interaction between the sonic environment, the socio-cultural milieu, and the individual listener as well as the (conscious and unconscious) effects sound has on human behavior." The editor is Marcel Cobussen (M.A.Cobussen@umail.leidenuniv.nl).

SoundEffects: an interdisciplinary journal of sound and sound experience (http://www.soundeffects.dk; ISSN 1904-500X), is an irregularly published, open-access, peer-reviewed, English-language journal published by Denmark's Aarhus University, and is indexed by the Directory of Open Access Journals. Per the editorial board, the title "brings together a plurality of theories, methodologies, and historical approaches applicable to sound as both mediated and unmediated experience." Disciplines covered include media studies, musicology, cultural studies, and psychology. The editor is Birgitte Stougaard and articles are submitted through an online system. Articles are available in PDF format.
