Hubbell Prize

ALLEN C. GUELZO has won the John T. Hubbell Prize for work published in Civil War History during 2002. Three members of the journal's editorial board chose his article "Defending Emancipation: Abraham Lincoln and the Conkling Letter, 1863" as the best one published in the journal volume year forty-eight. The prize earns the recipient a $1,000 cash award.

Using deep analysis of a letter from President Lincoln to James Cook Conkling on August 26, 1863, the author argued that the president had a true commitment to emancipation that would not be bartered away for peace. Editorial board members Gary W. Gallagher, Joan Waugh, and Alice Fahs selected the article because it captured Lincoln's beliefs on slavery and emancipation within the political world in which the president operated. It appeared in the December 2002 issue.

Guelzo is the Grace F. Kea Professor of History at Eastern University in St. Davids, Pennsylvania, where he also directs the Templeton Honors College. His scholarly interests center on American intellectual history between 1750 and 1865. He is the author of Edwards on the Will: A Century of American Philosophical Debate (1989), For the Union of Evangelical Christendom: The Irony of the Reformed Episcopalians, 1873 - 1930 (1994), The Crisis of the American Republic: A New History of the Civil War and Reconstruction (1995), and editor of Josiah G. Holland's Life of Abraham Lincoln (1998). His biography Abraham Lincoln: Redeemer President (1999) was the co-winner of the Lincoln Prize for 2000. He is working on a new book on the Emancipation Proclamation for Simon and Schuster.

Awarded annually and funded by a donor through the Richards Civil War Era Center at the Pennsylvania State University, the John T. Hubbell Prize recognizes the extraordinary contribution of its namesake to the field, who served as editor of Civil War History for thirty-five years.
