Beginning as a therapeutic attempt to recover the facts of his early life, The Facts, Roth's autobiography, turns into a meta-autobiography that reflects on the enigmatic nature of the act of autobiographical writing and that deconstructs its own autobiographical text. The question remains, to what extent is this self-reflexivity a defensive attempt to restrict the reader's range of response?
