This article argues that the impact of Claude Cahun’s portraiture lies not only in its repudiation of gender norms through transvestism and head-shaving, but also – and perhaps even more so – in the emphatic nature of her impudent gaze, which sharpens the implicit critique embedded in her transgender signals.
