Effect of Acupoint Sticking on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Endocrine FunctionChinese Full Text

Abstract: Objective To observe the effect of acupoint sticking at Back-Shu points with modified Si Ni powder on fatigue symptoms and endocrine function in chronic fatigue syndrome(CFS) due to liver depression and spleen deficiency. Methods Sixty eligible subjects were randomized into a treatment group and a control group, 30 in each group. The treatment group was intervened by acupuncture plus acupoint sticking at the Back-Shu points, while the control group was only by acupuncture at the Back-Shu points. The following items were observed and compared before and after intervention: fatigue scale 14(FS-14), self-made CFS(liver depression and spleen deficiency type) symptom grading scale, serum ACTH and CORT contents. Results After intervention, the FS-14, CFS symptom grading scale, serum ACTH and CORT contents were changed significantly in both groups(P<0.05). The changes of FS-14, symptom grading scale, serum ACTH and CORT in the treatment group were markedly different from those in the control group(P<0.05). The total effective rate was 85.2% in the treatment group versus 60.7% in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05). Conclusion Acupoint sticking at Back-Shu points with modified Si Ni powder can effectively improve the fatigue symptoms and endocrine function of the CFS patients due to liver depression and spleen deficiency.
