Abstract: Objective To investigate the effect of gender on Chinese college students’ self-efficacy and foreign language anxiety, and further explore the relationship between self-efficacy,anxiety and foreign language achievement. Methods By using GSES and FLCAS,1761 freshmen from Xi’an Jiaotong University were assessed in terms of self-efficacy and anxiety. T- test, correlation and multiple linear regression analyses were employed to explore the relationship between the variables. Results Female students’ scores on both self-efficacy( t = 2. 351,P =. 019) and anxiety( t = 3. 323,P =. 001) were significantly lower than male students. Self-efficacy and foreign language anxiety were negatively correlated( r =-. 463; P =. 000). Self-efficacy,test anxiety and foreign language classroom anxiety entered the regression model and they were predictors of students’ foreign language achievement( r = 3. 48,r2 =. 121,F = 80. 825,P =. 000). Conclusion Gender has a main effect on self-efficacy and foreign language anxiety. And there is a significantly negative correlation between self-efficacy and anxiety. Self-efficacy,test anxiety and foreign language classroom anxiety significantly influence learners’ foreign language achievement.
