Abstract: The surface of involute straight spur gear teeth was shocked by laser shock waves with wavelength of 1064 nm and pulse width of23 ns. The spot radius was 5 mm,and the single pulse energy was 40 J. In addition, the ANSYS /LS-DYNA software was employed to simulate the residual stresses induced by laser shock processing( LSP). The effect of laser pulse parameters on the residual stresses of tooth root was investigated by using the finite element method. The results show that after LSP the residual stresses on the surface and depth of gear teeth from the numerical simulation are validated by the results from the experiment. The ideal residual stresses distribution is obtained when the gear tooth root is shocked by laser with pulse width of 25 ns and the waveform of Gaussian. Moreover, the smaller the fillet radius is,the better the effect of LSP is.
