Abstract: BTEX concentration level, composition, pollution sources and status in Urumqi City and the surrounding area are monitored using passive sampling technique. The results show that the average concentration of benzene is 22. 487 μg / m3, toluene is 8. 188 μg / m3,ethyl benzene is 8. 336 μg/m3,xylene is 17. 597 μg/m3and BTEX 56. 465 μg / m3in Urumqi City and its surrounding area in winter. The overall pollution level is comparably high. The concentration order of BTEX is as follows: benzene > xylene > ethyl benzene > toluene. The concentration of Benzene and xylene accounts for 70. 81% of the total BTEX,as the main pollutants in this region. The benzene / toluene ratio ranges from 1. 21 to 4. 60,which indicates that BTEX in Urumqi and surrounding areas is mainly resulting from coal combustion. The monitoring data can objectively tell the BTEX pollution status of Urumqi City and its surrounding area.
