Dies and molds are generally used for press forming and injection molding. However they are expensive and need much time for production so that they are not suitable for prototyping and low-volume production. Laser forming is an effective tool for prototyping and low-volume production because it enables one to form sheet material without dies and molds. Laser forming is the deformation process caused by the thermal stress which is generated in the sheet by laser irradiation. The authors are developing a CAM system for laser forming. To develop the system, the feasibility of laser forming were clarified by experiments and FEM analyses in this paper.
