Abstract

The Digby Mary Magdalen and Shakespeare's Pericles tell the same story; the tale of Pericles is identical to that of the King of Marcylle in the saint play. The plays thus provide the opportunity to compare the dramaturgical work of two periods: they present the same tale, told to two different audiences, in two different playing-spaces. The paper examines how the place-and-scaffold playing space and the unlocalized stage of the Globe effect the representation of travel and space in the two plays.
