Abstract
The SheepToShip LIFE project aims to enhance the contribution of the sheep sector - from sheep farming to processing milk and dairy products - towards the achievement of EU climate change targets. By developing and promoting innovative and eco-sustainable production models, SheepToShip LIFE aims to meet its overall objective of reducing by 20% in 10 years greenhouse gas emissions from the Sardinian sheep farming sector and dairy supply chain.

Our goal with this experimental random control treatment is to investigate the influence of social norms on the purchase behavior of Sardinian dairy product consumers.

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
This experiment investigates the impact of social influence on the willingness to pay for low-emission sheep cheese.
We manipulate the strength of a social norm between treatments. Subjects are informed about the hypothetical nature of the experiment. The control group is told that 25% of the fellow population consumes already low-emission sheep cheese (Altroconsumo) while the treatment group is told that 75% of the fellow population consumes low-emission sheep cheese (Eurobarometro).


Hypothesis 1:
There is a positive relationship between the share of the population buying low-emission food products (stated in a social norm) and the indicated WTP.

Hypothesis 2:
There is a positive relationship between the share of the population buying low-emission food products (stated in a social norm) and stated beliefs.
