Abstract

We discuss the coupling of bending and torsional degrees of freedom for actin filaments. When a filament is placed in a situation of low symmetry, such as in contact with a surface, actin is shown to develop a spontaneous, non-zero curvature. We discuss the implications of this result on the interpretation of recent experiments which measure the binding modulus of biological filaments.
