ABSTRACT

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) has a hot and dry temperament in TPM literature. It is commonly used orally as powder or decoction. Positive effects on the mind and brain, respiratory problems, different infections, wound healing, pain relief, hepatoprotection, and improvement of sexual desire are among the therapeutic uses mentioned in TPM literature. Clinical evidence showed that cinnamon has considerable effects on metabolic syndrome, especially in glycemic control. Also, it has antioxidant, wound-healing, and antimicrobial properties. Cinnamon can be effective in improving the symptoms of patients with multiple sclerosis, allergic rhinitis, primary dysmenorrhea, and headache. Cinnamon seems to be a safe spice. However, if taken in high dosage, it may cause some minor adverse events and allergic reactions with self-limiting nature. It should be noted that its use during pregnancy is contraindicated. However, no concern has been identified for use during lactation.
