ABSTRACT

In the absence of roll bite lubrication, oxides are the only major lubricants in hot rolling. Their formation on rolls and strip is addressed rst, followed by a discussion of the composition and colour of oxides on rolls. Finally, the adherence of oxides to substrate, their impact on friction in roll gap and the modelling of their growth are analysed.
