ABSTRACT

Cognition, briefly, is the capacity to acquire, store and use knowledge. Indeed, it shares its etymological origin with ‘knowledge’ in the Indo-European root gno. It has also been defined as ‘the totality of capacities underlying complex adaptive behaviour’1 and, more lengthily, as ‘the capacity of the brain to process information accurately and to program adaptive behaviour, involving the abilities to solve problems, communicate, memorize information or focus attention’.2
