ABSTRACT
Land-cover information provides essential information for global scienti‡c applications and regional environmental policies. It establishes the boundary conditions for general circulation models used for simulating climate and for land-surface process models used for studying earth system energy, water, and material transport. The accuracy with which such maps depict actual land cover at some speci‡ed time can in«uence the reliability of the scenarios the models generate.
