ABSTRACT

Behavior is the most basic component of any process of change, and the transition to healthy behaviors best occurs in increments as a gradual process of achieving short-term goals within an overarching, long-term goal. In this way, modication of the behavior will be reinforced, incorporated into one’s behavioral repertoire, and successfully maintained. Positive reinforcement at each point in the process can provide motivation to achieve the next short-term goal. Thus, the acquisition of a series of small units of behavior can form new and healthier patterns of eating behaviors.
