ABSTRACT
This chapter provides an overview about the state-of-the-art solutions in several mixed-criticality industrial use-cases. It discusses the research challenges of several use-cases with respect to system architectures, platform technologies and development methods. The chapter offers an overview of the challenges and state-of-the-art solutions in the health-care domain. In the wind-power domain, there is a tremendous market push towards off-shore operation. The road to off-shore introduces new technological challenges, stringent safety requirements and new standards to comply with. The state-of-the-art protection system is an external module integrated in the EtherCAT ring. This is the only module that checks safety data in order to decide over the safety chain. In the health-care domain there is an increasing trend towards mobile and smart solutions, to achieve potential improved care, cost savings and reduction of errors.
