ABSTRACT

Krill forms one of the most abundantly available animal sources of marine origin. It has very good quantity of useful omega 3 fatty acids and good quality proteins and minerals. In spite of this, it is being underutilized mainly due to its high fluoride content and high protease content of muscle, which degrades the muscle protein rapidly. Use of krill meat for human consumption can be increased by overcoming these problems. At present it is mainly used as fish feed for aquaculture and as bait for sport fishing. A variety of medicinally important high value products can be prepared from krill which can find extensive utilization of this underutilized resources. India is expanding its aquaculture activities and at present ranks second in aquaculture production. Huge quantity of feed will be required to meet the ever-expanding aquaculture industry. In this paper, possibility of utilizing krill as source of aqua feed is explored.
