ABSTRACT

Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine is a pioneering arena that uses biodegradable/biocompatible polymers, biochemical (growth factors), and living cells to generate structures similar to tissue. Tissue engineering aims to construct damaged organs/tissues. It is commonly used for the repair of damaged organs, skin substitutes, healing of the wound, repair of heart, blood vessels, liver, GIT, muscles, neurons, kidney, trachea, cornea, dental and oral structure, reproductive organs, etc. Besides these, it is also used for diagnostic purposes. However, tissue 450engineering and regenerative medicine is a multidisciplinary arena, which chiefly emphasizes the progression and use of resources in chemistry, physics, clinical sciences, life sciences, and engineering to overcome the problems of basic therapeutic issues, such as loss of tissue or organ failure. This chapter briefly describes the role and applications of biodegradable polymers in different tissue/organ regeneration.
