ABSTRACT

Various species of Ganoderma are widespread in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Europe, Africa, America and Oceania. These extremely valuable mushrooms have always attracted the attention of human communities, who have used them to treat a number of health disorders. The age of probably the oldest specimens of Ganoderma found so far is estimated to be more than 6000 years old, and these five fruiting bodies come from a Neolithic site in Zhejiang province, China; it is assumed that this species was used by witch doctors in specific rituals. The very significant influence of this magical mushroom is also evidenced by Ganoderma images in archaeological relics, porcelain, sculptures, ancient temples and clothing. Often the subject of myths and ancient poems, a harbinger of good fortune and mysterious power, Ganoderma was a symbol of longevity, prosperity and happiness. Considering the enormous influence in certain human communities, from ancient times to the present day, it is not surprising that this unique mushroom has become the subject of modern scientific research, which in recent decades confirms its exceptional properties.
